How Often Should You Replace Your Furnace Filter?

Every once in a while we’re asked what is the most important thing that a homeowner can do to secure their air conditioning and heating system between their seasonal PLUS Maintenance Tune-ups? The answer is simple this; remember to change the heating and air conditioning air filter. Changing furnace and return air filters is critical to the proper performance of your HVAC system, not to mention your home’s air quality. Studies show that indoor air pollution is one of the top five environmental health risks. We know it’s the last thing on your mind, but this is really important stuff. Changing the air filters is not all that hard for most homeowners, but there are usually two challenges to actually completing this job:

  • Knowing just how often to change your furnace or air conditioner filter.
  • Remembering to change air filters when needed.

How Often Should You Replace Your Furnace Filter?

With the furnace running all winter, that means that a lot of air has been pushed through your ducts and into your home. Furnace filters are trusty when it comes to catching dust, pet dander, and other airborne bacteria, but when your filter gets old a few things happen: your filter gets clogged, your furnace has to work harder to push air through, and often times what does make it through are particles of the nasty gunk and build up. Being diligent about checking and changing your furnace filter can help avoid all of these things.

So, just how often should you change your furnace filter?

Consider your home life habits:

It may help to consider your habits at home. If you have a lot of animals with a lot of pet dander or if you have allergies, you may want to change your filter more often. If you live with a smoker, you may also want to change it more often. If you run your fan a lot you should check it more often. It also depends on the season. Obviously the furnace is in more use during the winter months so you should be more diligent about checking it during the winter season.

We suggest that you go ahead and check your filter once a month. It couldn’t hurt, right? If you are using a 3-inch thick filter and all is well, by all means, go ahead and wait every three months to replace your filter.

Here are a few things to remind you of the advantages of checking and replacing your furnace filter often. Maybe you don’t want to make a run to the hardware store, but it will definitely pay off.

  • Overall better air quality: you won’t have “good” air getting damaged by all the build up and bacteria on your filter.
  • Keep your furnace running smoothly: which means your energy bill won’t skyrocket because your furnace is working twice as hard
  • Helps with allergies and asthma: for those of you who have allergies or asthma, it is important to keep the quality of your air high.

Have you checked your filter this winter? Have you replaced it? If you can’t remember the last time you did, definitely go ahead and replace it! Guarantee that you will see and feel a difference. If it is a matter of forgetting, this is not something to neglect! Check your filter every month and replace it every three months.
